The first local dialogue meetings on Water Resources Management were held on 13-16 May on the Alazani-Iori and Khrami-Debed River Basins. They gathered up to 140 representatives of local self-governing bodies and state institution branches in seven meetings at Tianeti, Telavi, Kvareli, Signagi, Sagarejo, Bolnisi and Tetritskaro.

Local dialogue meetings are ongoing activities supported by the European Union in the frame of EUWI+ to engage communities and stakeholders in water resources management.

Thanks to these meetings, local communities contributed to reviewing the first results of draft river basin management plans by providing more than 100 opinions on matters related to significant water management issues in Georgia’s Alazani-Iori and Khrami-Debed River Basins.

Local stakeholders highlighted the importance of river basin management, which focuses on balanced planning of water use, optimised water supply, sanitation and irrigation facilities, improved flood risk reduction and early warning systems. The quality of drinking water and the overall water supply system for the local population is a crucial factor to consider in drafting the programme of measures.

Participants were keen to play an important role in decisions related to water resources management, in particular by getting involved the Alazani-Iori and Khrami-Debed river basin councils.  They also expressed a strong interest in helping to draft the programme of measures and collaborate closely with the project to ensure that it takes into account local needs and water uses.
