The second training on the application of the Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) for the River Basin Management Plans was organized in Tbilisi, Georgia on 18 November 2020 (in virtual format). The event was held within the framework of the SEA Pilot Project implemented by the UNECE with funding from the European Union under the EU Water Initiative Plus Programme. The training aimed at enhancing capacities of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture (MEPA) and the Ministry of Health of Georgia on the application of the SEA for the strategic documents being developed for water sector.
The event brought together 25 representatives of the Environmental Assessment Department, Water Division and the National Environmental Agency of the MEPA. The training was opened by Ms. Mariam Makarova, Head of Water Division of the MEPA and Mr. Alexander Belokurov, Environmental Affairs Officer, UNECE.
The training focused on the identification of the key environmental and health issues for the SEA, analysis of the likely effects and formulating mitigation measures, preparation of the SEA report and developing final SEA recommendations. Series of presentations by international and national experts were complemented by group exercises on the basis of the pilot SEA carried out for the draft Alazani-Iori RBMP.
