On 1 April 2021, a workshop gathered around 30 participants to present and collect feedbacks on the draft version of Water Supply and Sanitation Master Plan for the Nirnova sub-basin in the Republic of Moldova.

In Moldova, access to tap water in rural areas is about 37%, compared to 89% in urban areas. In the frame of the European Union Water Initiative +, Solidarity Water Europe and OiEau (France) support the development of a master plan for water supply and sanitation systems in the Nirnova basin. This master plan proposes solutions that have been calibrated to meet local context on technical, financial and institutional key aspects. It will help improve access to safe drinking water and sanitation in rural areas and protect the quality of rivers and groundwater.

“Thanks to the European contribution through EUWI+ and Solidarity Water Europe, the Nirnova river basin communities will benefit from improvement in water supply and sanitation services through the implementation of this Master Plan. I would like to express my warmest thanks to the donors and consultants for their support to solve the issues we mayors are facing to improve the water supply and sanitation sector.” Vladimir Bodean, Mayor of Siscani commune, Nisporeni, Nirnova River Basin.

The workshop was co-organised by Solidarity Water Europe and OiEau. Experts discussed next steps for the finalization of the plan, in particular governance and financing options to boost its implementation.

“Moldovan rural communities face real challenges regarding the provision of water supply and sanitation services. The Project “Solidarity Water Europe” brings all  stakeholders together in order to plan, manage and facilitate the missions of local authorities in the water sector […]”  Svetlana Duca, manager Solidarity Water Europe-International Secretariat for Water in Moldova

The Nirnova is part of the bigger Danube-Prut and Black Sea river basin, a pilot river basin where EUWI+ is updating the River Basin Management Plan, Cycle II (2022-2027).
