A workshop on strategising the water sector reform in Ukraine took place on 5 July 2019 in Lviv.
Organised through the EU funded EUWI+ project, participants took stock of progress in approximation towards the European Union’s Water Directives in Ukraine. Participants from national and regional authorities, water associations and vodocanals joined experts from Denmark, Sweden, Romania and representatives from International Organisations to discuss recent progress in developing new water legislation and policies aligned with the European Union’s Water acquis in Ukraine. The workshop considered Ukraine’s current water challenges, its long-term national and international commitments and the existing strategic and policy framework. Participants debated the affordability and implementability of the current plans, benefits for citizens and proposed alternative pathways to engage political support and audiences outside of the water and environment communities.
The meeting was chaired by Mr Mykola Kuzio, the Deputy Minister for European Integration of Ukraine, and organized with the support of the EUWI+ programme.

Background info: Launched in September 2016 for a duration of four years, the European Union Water Initiative plus for the Eastern Partneship programme (EUWI+) is the biggest commitment of the EU to the water sector in the EaP countries. It supports the six partner countries (Azerbaijan, Armenia, the Republic of Belarus, Georgia, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine) to align their legislation with EU policy on water management, with a focus on transboundary rivers. It provides support to the development of a long-term vision of water sector reforms in the Partner Countries. The project is implemented by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), and an EU Consortium comprising the Austrian Environment Agency (Austria) and the International Office for Water (France). www.euwipluseast.eu
