Dnieper Basin Council in Belarus: next steps to implement the River Basin Management Plan in 2020

On 13 December 2019, the Dnieper Basin Council took place in the city of Mogilev, Belarus.

Participants discussed approval procedures for the Dnieper river basin management plan and the results of several expert studies concerning water protection and quality. The studies covered topics such as the delimitation of water protection zones and river protection strips bordering the Dnieper basin, the delimitation of water bodies and water pollutants (micro plastics and others). Participants also discussed the possibility of adding the concept of “heavily modified water bodies” into Belarusian regulation.

Discussions covered other topics such as adaptation to climate change and funding needs to finance the construction and renovation of waste water treatment facilities.

Participants also presented the next steps to implement the Dnieper River Basin Management Plan in 2020, including the development of river sub-basin management plans. They expressed their wish to make the 2020 edition of the Dnieper day a transboundary event, celebrating River Day together with Ukraine.

Representatives from the Ministry of natural resources and environmental protection of the Republic of Belarus, including representatives from the Ministry of communal services and housing and from the Ministry of agriculture and food, participated in the Dnieper Basin Council.

Other participants included experts from the Central Research Institute for Complex Use of Water Resources (CRICUWR), and representatives from Mogilev oblast committee for natural resources and environmental protection, from the private sector, NGOs and  from EUWI+ (International Office for Water and OECD).

 

Approval of the Western Bug river basin management plan

The Western Bug river basin management plan was approved on 10 December 2019 by  the two regional executive committees of Brest and Grodno (Hrodna).
The EUWI+ project supports the work of this basin council. The Western Bug river basin management plan will ensure the development and implementation of measures to protect water ecosystems and ensure rational use of the resource.
