The work on the Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) of the draft Alazani-Iori River Basin Management Plan (RBMP) in Georgia was supported by UNECE with the financial support of the European Union under Result 1 of European Union Water Initiative Plus (EUWI+) programme. It was facilitated through a dedicated expert group led by a national coordinator with support of an international expert. Following the kick-off of the SEA process in December 2019, capacity-development workshops were conducted for the national SEA specialists to train them to undertake SEA procedures in line with the international practices and treaties, and national legislation. The SEA scoping report, prepared by the national expert group, went through an on-line public consultation process and comments received were used to finalise the document. The SEA final report was presented and discussed during a webinar on 21 October 2020. The event brought together over 35 representatives of relevant governmental institutions, international and donor organizations, NGOs, experts and other stakeholders. The work on the SEA process was closely aligned with the work on the Alazani-Iori RBMP, which is also elaborated with the support from the European Union under Result 2 of the EUWI+. The report will play a key role in finalising the national SEA procedure with the goal to facilitate the official adoption of the Alazani-Iori RBMP and, therefore, contribute to Georgia’s efforts in achieving sustainable management of water resources and specifically Sustainable Development Goal 6 on clean water and sanitation and Goal 3 on health and well-being.
